Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of screws do you use in your construction?

They are galvanized deck screws with a Philips / Square Head and painted a cedar color. This special driver is needed for your drill; the screws and drivers are available at Home Depot.

What kind of water repellant are you using on the bench boards?

We use a water based sealer with Cedar Tone. Thompson's Deck Sealer will work just fine as well. Don't use Polyurathene. Olympic makes a good product, as well as Behr and  Cabot.  On the other hand, you can always leave the boards alone, and they will naturally "patina" to a bone gray, giving your bench or chair an aged look.

In an exposed area, how should I place my arbor or bench?

The most important thing is to keep the "legs" of the arbor or bench from making direct contact with the ground. When we place an arbor, for example, we supply square brick pavers (available at a home improvement store). We put a paver under each post. Then we drive a 24 inch piece of rebar into the ground beside each post until about 4 inches is above ground. We then attach copper tubing straps (available in plumbing department) around the rebar, and screw them into the post. Now the arbor is secure and off the ground. Benches and chairs should also have pavers under each leg if placed directly on the ground.

I've noticed small piles of sawdust on my structure, plus small holes in the wood. What is this?

One of the only bugs we have problems with are Wood Boring Beetles (or Powder Post Beetles). They like to burrow in dried wood. Go to your home improvement store and look for a concentrated insectiside. Many varieties are out there. We mix it in a spray bottle and coat the structure, and those boogers are gone forever.

Can I find your products at my local Garden Center?

Probably not. We've discontinued our wholesale line. Send us an email telling us your location, and we'll find a way to get our product to you.

Where do you get all your cedar?

We go to areas that are about to be timbered or clear cut, and make deals with the owners of the property to cut the cedar. The size we cut will usually be bulldozed, so in a sense we're saving them from a much worse destiny!

Do you have any printed materials you can send?

Yes, we do. We have produced a mini-portfolio for distribution to Landscape Architects. Please request one via email or phone.

Where is your price list?

We don't have one. Every structure is custom built and priced accordingly. We're always happy to give you instant ballpark quotes on your project, pricing info on anything featured on our site, or a fixed price quote on your specific project (with supplied details and/or sketches).

For other questions or comments, please send us an email and we'll get right back in touch.
